music by Boris Asafyev
A Polish noblewoman, Maria, is abducted during a Tatar raid that destroys her family's castle and kills her fiancé, Vaslav, and is brought to the harem of Khan Girey in Bakhchisarai. Girey falls obsessively in love with her, neglecting his favorite wife Zarema, who begs Maria to release her hold on him. When Maria refuses to understand or comply, the jealous Zarema stabs her to death, and Girey has Zarema executed in turn. In the closing scene, Girey mourns alone at the Fountain of Tears he built in Maria's memory.
