A young nobleman, Frédéric, ruined by gambling, summons the devil Beelzebub and is given a demon servant, Urielle, to do his bidding. Urielle secretly falls in love with Frédéric and, though ordered to secure his soul, repeatedly rescues him and his true love, the peasant girl Lilia, from ruin, pirates, and a rival suitor. When Frédéric finally chooses to die rather than submit to the devil's bargain, Urielle tears up his contract and sacrifices herself in his place. In the final apotheosis, an angel restores her to life and carries her up to heaven.
