In Napoleonic-occupied Spain, the gypsy girl Paquita rejects the advances of the gypsy chief Iñigo and falls in love with the young French officer Lucien d'Hervilly, unaware that she was kidnapped as an infant and is actually of noble birth. When Iñigo and a corrupt Spanish governor plot to murder Lucien, Paquita secretly saves his life by switching a drugged glass of wine. At a grand ball she exposes the governor's treachery, and a portrait reveals her to be Lucien's own cousin, clearing the way for their marriage.
