La Sylphide

On the morning of his wedding to Effie, a young Scotsman named James is visited by a Sylph, an ethereal winged spirit who has fallen in love with him; enchanted, he becomes distracted from his bride-to-be even as the wedding preparations proceed around him. When the Sylph reappears during the celebrations and steals Effie's ring, James abandons his wedding to chase her into the forest, where she reveals her magical world and the company of her fellow Sylphs. There, the vengeful witch Madge, whom James had earlier insulted, tricks him into giving the Sylph a poisoned scarf; when he wraps it around her, her wings fall off and she dies in his arms. James is left devastated in the forest, alone with his loss, while in the distance Effie marries his rival Gurn.
