Carmen Suite
Choreography · Alberto Alonso (1967)
music by Rodion Shchedrin (arranging themes from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen for strings and percussion)
A free-spirited factory worker, Carmen, is arrested after a brawl and seduces the soldier Don José into letting her escape. Freed, she is drawn instead to the celebrated bullfighter Escamillo, sparking José's jealousy even as the shadowy figure of Fate looms over her, reading her cards and foretelling disaster. Torn between her two lovers, Carmen refuses to be possessed by either, and José ultimately kills her outside the bullring as Escamillo faces the bull within it.
